Q: What is the Global Development Awards and Medals Competition?

A: The largest international competition for research on development, the Global Development Awards and Medals Competition is open only to researchers and development practitioners who are citizens of developing and transition countries. The emphasis is on recognizing and supporting promising young talent, individuals and innovation in the field of development research and development projects capable of significantly impacting local communities.

The competition is held in three categories:

1. Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development: This Award is for applicants submitting research proposals that are seeking to explore any of the three competition themes (see below) in an original, innovative, policy-relevant way.

2. Medals for Research on Development: These medals are for completed research papers of outstanding nature on any of the three competition themes (see below).

3. Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project: This Award is for exceptional, innovative on-going development projects that have been able to impact the holistic development of local communities and need further financial assistance for scaling-up.

Q: Can I submit an application on any research topic?

A: No you cannot. The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and Medals for Research on Development should focus on any one of the following three competition themes:

1. External Capital Flows and Financing for Development

2. Domestic Resource Mobilization and Financial Sector Development: Another Angle to Look at the MDGs in a Post-crisis World?

3. Innovative Sources of Development Finance

Q: Is the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development open only to citizens of developing and transition country?

A: Yes, the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development is open only to citizens and permanent residents of developing and transition countries. Citizens of developing and transition countries temporarily residing in a developed country for no more than five years are eligible to apply as part of a team. However, the principal investigator of the research proposal must currently reside and be a permanent resident of a developing or transition country. In case of more than one researcher, at least 50 per cent of the researchers (including the principal investigator) must currently reside in a developing or transition country.

Q: Are the Medals for Research on Development open only to citizens of developing and transitions country?

A: Yes, the Medals for Research on Development are open only to citizens of developing and transitions countries. Citizens of developing and transition countries temporarily residing in a developed country for no more than five years are eligible to apply.

Q: Is the Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project open to development projects in developing and transition countries?

A: Yes, the Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project is open to all development projects being implemented in Africa, Asia, Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, and the transition economies of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The project must be managed by a non-governmental organization (NGO) with its headquarters in a country in one of the above regions. The project must have been implemented before June 30, 2009. Submissions concerning a more recently implemented project or only a project idea will not be considered.

Q: How can I submit my application?

A: Application along with the documents specified in the competition guidelines can be submitted as electronic files online at http://opa.gdnet.org. Please note that we do not accept hard copy of applications or those sent through post. When you submit an application, you will receive a tracking code and password which you can then use to update your application

Q: Can I edit and re-upload my already submitted application?

A: Yes, you can. To edit your submission, go to http://opa.gdnet.org and click on 'Update Entry'. Then enter your tracking code and password and click submit. You can now edit or re-upload your submission.

Q: Is there a format in which I should submit my application?

A: Yes, submissions for the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and the Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project are accepted only on the prescribed application templates found online http://www.gdnet.org/~2010awards. Submissions should follow the page limit as specified in the competition guidelines. The submissions should be typed in Times New Roman font, size 11 with single line spacing. Additional documents can be submitted in the form of annexes.

There is no prescribed application template for Medals for Research on Development. Word limit is between 6,000 and 12,000 words, typed in Times New Roman, font size 11 with single line spacing and one inch margin.

All submissions should follow the proper naming convention. For example:

Lastname_proposal/paper.doc or Lastname_proposal/paper.pdf

Q: Is there any age limit?

A: The upper age limit for researchers applying for Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and Medals for Research on Development is 45 years as of October 25, 2010.

Q: What are the deadlines for submitting an application?

A: The deadline for submitting the registration form, full project description in the prescribed template and CVs of the applicants for the Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project is September 22, 2010 (Indian Standard Time 6:00 PM). For the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and Medals for Research on Development, the deadline for submitting the online registration form, CVs of applicants, abstract, and completed study/research proposal in the prescribed template is October 25, 2010 (Indian Standard Time 6:00 PM).
